JILL MIRZA‘Arles Café with Red Umbrellas’14 x 18 in / 35.5 x 45.5 cm Acrylic on Canvas Board 2009
The unrelieved heat of this painting is tempered only by the touches of grey in someof the doors and windows. The strong sunlight emphasises the dark interiors and theshadows are heavy, stronger in tone than the objects which cast them. The umbrellasbisect the painting with a slash of brilliant red. A whole range of reds and oranges arefound here with the pink of the girl’s shirt introducing a sharp almost acidic element. Thecafé is presented as a kind of stage set with the umbrellas and furniture playing roles assignificant as the two figures.
