JILL MIRZA ‘Below The Acropolis, with Cypress’ 8 x 8 in  /  20.3 x 20.3 cm    Acrylic on Canvas   2012
This painting is a snapshot image from travelling in Greece. When I started making  these small paintings I was involved in creating what I call ‘patchwork’ paintings, large  works made up of an arrangement of smaller images. I decided that many of these  images were very interesting as stand-alone pictures. Working on this small scale makes  me use simple gestures and keep the marks fresh and telling. The paintings themselves  make very satisfactory objects and work very well when a number of them are hung  close together.
